Solar panel mount with finite element stress analysis of the base structure.

Skybase Solar Lighting System

Project Overview

In partnership with Green Frog Systems, Aretech supported the development of the SkyBase portable solar lighting platform -  an engineered solution designed for temporary roadway and infrastructure applications operating in demanding environmental conditions.

The project required the development of a new structural approach capable of meeting high wind loading requirements while maintaining transportability, rapid deployment capability, and efficient storage. Existing ground-fixed solar systems were unable to satisfy the combined performance requirements for height, stability, and mobility.

Working collaboratively with Green Frog Systems, Aretech led the structural engineering and design development of the platform, delivering an optimised solution focused on structural performance, manufacturability, and real-world deployment practicality.

The Challenge

Temporary roadway and infrastructure projects often operate in exposed environments subject to severe wind conditions and strict compliance requirements.

The project presented several key engineering challenges:

  • Existing GFS systems could not achieve the required height and wind loading criteria simultaneously
  • Conventional designs generated excessive overturning forces under high wind conditions
  • Large ballast requirements reduced transport efficiency and deployment flexibility
  • The system required a compact transport configuration without compromising structural performance in-service
  • The client required a commercially viable solution suitable for repeated deployment across multiple projects

This required the development of a new structural approach rather than incremental modification of an existing design.

Aretech’s Technical Contribution

Aretech led the structural design and engineering development of the SkyBase platform, delivering a purpose-built solution tailored to the operational requirements of temporary roadway lighting projects.

Key Engineering Features:

  • Designed a new structural concept incorporating a T-piece support structure to position solar panels closer to the ground and reduce wind exposure
  • Optimised the structural geometry to minimise overturning forces under high wind loading conditions
  • Reduced ballast block size requirements, improving transportability and deployment efficiency
  • Developed a folding arm mechanism allowing compact storage and simplified transport logistics
  • Performed advanced structural optimisation to balance strength, weight, manufacturability, and deployment practicality
  • Engineered the system for repeatable field deployment in demanding temporary infrastructure environments

Deliverables and Outcome

Aretech provided full engineering support throughout the project, including:

  • Detailed 3D CAD modelling
  • Manufacturing drawings
  • Advanced finite element analysis (FEA)
  • Detailed structural design and compliance reporting
  • Manufacturing support
  • Quality control and engineering support during production

The SkyBase platform delivered a robust and transportable temporary solar lighting solution capable of operating in high wind regions where conventional systems were unsuitable.

The project demonstrated Aretech’s capability to:

  • Develop practical engineering solutions for technically challenging environments
  • Rapidly adapt concepts to meet site-specific operational constraints
  • Combine structural performance with deployment practicality and manufacturability
  • Support clients from concept development through to production and implementation

The SkyBase system was successfully deployed on the Centenary Bridge Upgrade project, demonstrating reliable performance in demanding temporary infrastructure environments. View the full project case study from Green Frog Systems:
